MEET OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS


Remi Acosta | President
Remi Acosta, Jr. was born in Guayanilla, Puerto Rico and at the age of twelve moved to Waterbury, Connecticut with his parents and six siblings. In 1970 enlisted in the Connecticut National Guards and in 1976 he received an Honorable discharge. In 1982, Remi began his professional career with the Connecticut Department of Correction. He was promoted through the ranks to the position of District Administrator, providing oversight for eight prisons and one county jail. He retired in 2006 and one year later became the interim Executive Director for the Hispanic Coalition. On June 2, 2008, Remi was appointed by Governor M. Jodi Rell to be a part-time member of the Board of Pardon and Paroles exclusively to the Parole Board.

Javier Alvarado| Vice President
Born and raised in Waterbury, CT, living in several neighborhoods such as South End, Overlook Willow, and Brooklyn sections. After graduating from John F. Kennedy High School, Javier enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard. Javier was shipped to basic training the day after graduation. He attended basic training at Ft. Bliss, Texas then later to Ft Sam Houston where he attended The Academy of Health Sciences and graduated as a combat medic. Due to his unwavering commitment to public service, Javier is actively engaged in his community by serving on the Hispanic Coalition of Greater Waterbury Board of Directors, where he once served as President (2000 - 03). He currently serves as the Program Director (PD) of Foster Care Services/Area Office Operations. As the PD, he is directly responsible for the coordinating, planning, and management of foster care operations for the state of Connecticut.
Haddie Beauchamp | Treasure
Ms. Hattie Beauchamp was born in Bronx, New York and at the age of 12 her family moved to Connecticut. She attended Hemingway Park School, Walsh grammar school and John F. Kennedy High School. She pursued her undergraduate degree at Central Connecticut State University where she earned a BS in Spanish and TESOL. In 1974 she graduated from Central Connecticut State University and was hired as Bilingual Teacher for the City of Waterbury at Chase school.
Maritza Acosta | Secretary
Born in Rio Piedras a district of San Juan, Puerto Rico. She is a compassionate and dedicated state child welfare employee and a consummate advocate for abused and neglected children. Maritza currently works for the State of Connecticut, Department of Children and Families (DCF) as a Program Supervisor. In her role as a Program Supervisor, she is responsible for managing the staff and operations of the investigation units in the New Britain Area Office.
Tavis Tindall
Is a partner with the law firm of Tindall, Holmes & Kestenband, LLC, which is a full service law firm located in Waterbury and Hartford, Connecticut. Tavis specializes in civil and commercial litigation and corporate law. Prior to entering the legal field, Tavis worked for several years in his father's international fine wine import and wholesale businesses, Le Courtier du Vin and Tindall Family Wine Company.
Mark Shumilla
Born and raised in Boston Massachusetts. Sports played a major role in his life growing up. He qualified for the Junior Olympic Team for the 50 yard breaststroke, only to forfeit his spot in finals qualifying due to the chicken pox. Was recruited to play football for the University of Rhode Island after high school. After graduating from the University of Rhode Island with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration – Management, signing a contract as a player/coach for the Vienna Rangers American Football Club in Vienna, Austria.
Victor Díaz
Born and raised in Waterbury, CT to a single mother. He was the second of six children. Victor is a proud graduate of the Waterbury public education system. While growing up, Victor had big dreams of one day being the first in his family to graduate from college, but while in high school, he was told by a guidance counselor to relinquish his dreams of going to college and pursue a technical career.
Yoellie Iglesias
Born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Yoellie completed her Masters degree in Education from the University of Bridgeport and her Bachelor’s degree in Science from Springfield College. Currently she is working for AFCAMP as a Parent Educator. Besides her formal education, she worked with Catholic Charities and the Department of Children and Families.
Omayra Pizarro
Omayra Pizarro was born and raised in Waterbury , Connecticut. Omayra is a paralegal with the law firm of Tindall, Holmes & Kestenband, LLC which is a full service law firm located in Waterbury and Hartford . Omayra has been a paralegal for 13 years and has throughout her career worked for three other law firms. Omayra received her Associates degree from Naugatuck Valley Community College in 1996 and is currently enrolled at Post University pursuing her bachelors in criminal justice. Omayra is fluent in Spanish and serves as an interpreter when needed. Omayra enjoys working with people and helping others especially in the Hispanic community. She is very determined and strives to achieve the best in any situation.
Fernando Ramirez
Fernando Ramirez was born and raised in Bridgeport CT, and attended the Central Magnet high school program. He made Waterbury his home in 1993 when he became a City Firefighter. Since then, he has become the President the Waterbury Firefighter Association. His duties include overseeing the over two hundred fifty member City Fire Department’s deployment in regards to public safety, and safety of fire department personnel. He also manages all negotiating of hours, wages, and working conditions of the fire department which currently responds to over 17,000 calls a year. Fernando plans to assist the Hispanic Coalition with their current programs and through his partnerships with various civic organizations, the community, and employee organizations enable to strengthen the coalition in the future.
Kim Benitez
A native New Yorker, of Puerto Rican descent. Presently resides in Waterbury, CT. Her educational background is in Human Services. She has worked for: Safe Haven Sexual Assault & Domestic Violence Crisis Services, in Waterbury - she was a Bilingual Crisis Counselor. StayWell Health Center - she was a Family Support Worker for first time mothers and their children. Family Services of Greater Waterbury - she was a Family Support Worker for the Reunification Program. As an active Board Member of the Hispanic Coalition for the past 3 years, her interest is to help bring awareness and education programs for the youth, parents and the elderly. Ms. Benitez works for the Social Security Administration in Torrington, CT. She is also a Mentor for the Connecticut Junior Republic, in Waterbury. She enjoys cooking, movies and being with friends and family.
Ronnie Vazquez Beauchamp
Born and raised in Waterbury, CT of Puerto Rican descent. Mr. Vazquez has a bachelor’s degree in Political Science with a specialization in Public Administration from Central Connecticut State University. He also had international experience studying and traveling abroad in England, Africa, Cuba, and Egypt. Upon his international studies Ronnie worked in Washington, D.C. as a Public Policy Fellow for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. As a fellow he has had experience working in the United States Congress, Superior Court for the District of Columbia, and the Connecticut General Assembly. Mr. Vazquez is currently employed for the Waterbury Public School System where he has worked for over six years as a Grant Coordinator overseeing educational policies and programs related to the No Child Left Behind Act. Ronnie’s interests include music, traveling, and advocating public policy & social justice issues.
Melitza Velez
Born and raised in Waterbury, Connecticut to parents native of Puerto Rico. She has been part of the board for over five years. She is a graduate of Uconn where she received her masters’ degree in Clinical Social Work. Currently she is employed at Connecticut Junior Republic where she has advocated for youth and their families for the past six years.. Prior to that she has worked counseling victims of domestic violence and sexual assault along with doing community education. Melitza is a member of First Assembly of God Church where she is an active member working in the nursery and providing counseling to women. Melitza is committed to advocating for those who are under represented and underprivileged due to socioeconomic, racial and ethic backgrounds.

2010 Annual Coqui Awards Banquet
On Friday October 8th at 7pm The Hispanic Coalition of Greater Waterbury will be hosting our Annual Coqui Awards Banquet at The Villa Rosa in Waterbury, CT. Tickets are $45.00 per person and must be purchased in advance by calling (203) 754-6172.
